Front OfficeBill

Welcome to the offices of KWD Radio. Come on in and have a look around. There are a lot of sites scattered around the web devoted to the radio programs that were produced and aired in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. I love those sites and visit many of them regularly. But a long time ago, I became interested in the production side of these programs. I started collecting vintage radio broadcast equipment and eventually found myself with enough stuff to set up a pretty typical small-town station in the years around World War II.

Strangely enough, collecting vintage broadcast gear is not exactly a common pastime. So when I started doing this almost two decades ago now, information was pretty thin. I started working on the first version of this site about ten years ago, in the hope that I might meet up with some like-minded people. At the time, about the only real resource I could find was OldRadio.com, an invaluable site set up by Barry Mishkind. Other sites have appeared since, some of which have some really good information. But by far the best is AmericanRadioHistory.com. If you have any interest in the history of radio and you haven’t already discovered this site, you’re in for a treat. It’s an Alladin’s Cave of radio history. David Gleason has scanned and made available more publications than I ever knew even existed. If there is (or was) a book or magazine relating to radio broadcasting, chances are that you will find it on this site. It is really amazing.
